If it were possible to create a Hormel Foods worker from scratch, Jacob Byer would no doubt surface as a prototype.
He’s known for his superior work ethic and for “traits such as likability, charisma and enthusiasm.” He’s been tapped for the employee-of-the-quarter distinction twice and never misses a day of work, says his supervisor, Matthew Anthony.
“Jacob has set himself apart as a driven and enthusiastic professional. He leads by example,” he adds.
For four years, Jacob has been a member of the warehouse team at Logistic Service, LLC (LSI), a Hormel Foods dry-storage distribution center in Eldridge, Iowa. To illustrate why he was chosen as a recent Pride of the Jersey award winner, General Manager Mel Kinkade points to Jacob’s productivity.
“Jacob is operating at 114 percent direct and 102.9 percent overall,” he says.

He is also a quick thinker and finds humor in everything, qualities appreciated by his coworkers and managers.
So, when you ask Jacob what he likes to do outside of work, he may well respond, “Sleep.” But he is only partly serious. In fact, Jacob exhibits the same qualities in his personal life as he does at LSI.
He is a single dad of Haley, 9; and Austin, 7. He is with them every other weekend and enjoys participating in their activities. His daughter likes to dance. Meanwhile, Austin is becoming interested in football.
Jacob is grateful for the life he has at LSI and at home, which may well be the best of his many positive qualities.
“Every day is a good day when you can wake up and come into work,” he says. “It’s a good company. I’ve watched it grow.”
And then, just when you expect him to say something humorous, he surprises.
“I’m living the dream,” he says.
